HE WHO WOULD VALIANT BE
Author – John Bunyan
Adapter – Percy Dearmer
Composer – Ralph Vaughan Williams
(adapted from an English folk tune)
1 He who would valiant be ‘gainst all disaster
let him in constancy follow the Master
there’s no discouragement shall make him once relent
his first avowed intent to be a pilgrim
2 Who so beset him round with dismal stories
do but themselves confound – his strength the more is
no foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight
he will make good his right to be a pilgrim
3 Since Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit
we know we at the end shall life inherit
then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say
I’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.
The words to this hymn speak of what it is like to be a pilgrim. We must labor (make great effort) night and day to be a pilgrim. Trials and tribulations will come but if we remain in Christ Jesus we will have peace in any situation we face.
John 16:33 (CSB)
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
Romans 12:12 (CSB)
Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.
STAND UP, STAND UP FOR JESUS
Author – George Duffield
Composer – George J Webb
1 Stand up, stand up for Jesus
ye soldiers of the cross;
lift high his royal banner
it must not suffer loss
from vict’ry unto vict’ry
his army he shall lead
till ev’ry foe is vanquished
and Christ is Lord indeed.
2 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the trumpet call obey;
forth to the mighty conflict
in this his glorious day.
Ye that are men now serve him
against unnumbered foes;
let courage rise with danger
and strength to strength oppose.
3 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you,
ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armor,
each piece put on with prayer;
where duty calls or danger,
be never wanting there.
4 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle,
the next, the victor’s song.
To him that overcometh
a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory
shall reign eternally.
Hard times will come. As Christians, we are not promised an easy ride but if we follow Jesus and are faithful to Him and follow His commands, then we are promised a crown of life, eternal life with our Lord Jesus in heaven.
James 1:12 (CSB)
Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
