Jeremiah 17:7-8 (CSB)
The person who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed. He will be like a tree planted by water: it sends its roots out toward a stream, it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and its foliage remains green. It will not worry in a year of drought or cease producing fruit.
These verses come from the 17th chapter of Jeremiah, and the chapter is about the persistent sin of Judah in the time of the prophet Jeremiah.
This scripture describes a tree, which represents a person. The tree in a year of heat and drought, whose roots are planted by the stream will never be bothered by the heat and drought. Its leaves will always be green and it will always bear fruit. Likewise, a person who is firmly and securely rooted in Jesus Christ and who puts all their trust in the Lord, will always be protected and helped in life and will be blessed. When we fully trust the Lord, we do not worry because we know God will provide all of our needs.
What becomes of people who do not put their trust in the Lord, and turn away from Him? Jeremiah 17:5-6 (CSB) tells us; This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the Lord. He will be like a juniper in the Arabah; he cannot see when good comes but dwells in the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land where no one lives.
Trusting in the Lord results in blessings. Trusting in mankind and turning away from the Lord results in curses.
Dear God,
When we face trials and problems in our lives, and worry doesn’t seem to leave our minds, please remind us of these verses. Help us to walk by faith and not by sight. Whatever happens in this world, we know You are in control of everything, and by trusting You we are blessed and protected. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
