Matthew 6:31-34 (CSB)
“So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Jesus Christ was telling His followers not to worry and be anxious about what they would eat, drink and wear. He explains that God knows you need certain things in life. The next part of this scripture is very important. Jesus tells His followers to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be provided for you. Jesus was explaining that to know God and to live a righteous life that is pleasing to God, will in turn provide you with your daily needs. What this means is that first we have to know God, trust Him and have faith in Him and His promises. To worry and be anxious is expressing our unbelief in God’s promises. He wants us to believe in Him and trust that He will provide our daily needs. The world’s attitude is one of self-sufficiency, but as believers our attitude must be one of God-sufficiency.
Dear God,
With the cost of things that we need getting more expensive, in the world right now, we need to understand what Jesus was telling His followers, and we need to follow Jesus’ instructions. We must fully trust you God and have faith in you and believe your promises, to provide all our daily needs. Anything less, on our part, is moving away from you into unbelief of your promises. When we recognise you as our Provider, our worry and fear will decline and we will stay close to You and believe Your Word. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
