1 Corinthians 10:7 (CSB)
Don’t become idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party.
The Apostle Paul is letting the Christians in Corinth know that God takes idol worship very seriously and may discipline those who are participating in it. Paul reminds them of the time when the ancient Israelites in the wilderness persuaded Aaron to make a golden calf, as a god, for them to worship. God disciplined them for their betrayal of Him. The first two, of God’s 10 Commandments are; Do not have other gods besides me, and, Do not make an idol for yourself.
Paul warned the Christians not to worship idols, as God sees that as disobedience and betrayal, and there could well be consequences for their behaviour. Idolatry is not just about worshipping false idol statues. It is about anything else that takes your time, attention and devotion away from God.
Dear God,
Thank you for showing us that we must not let anything else take our time, attention and devotion away from you. Please let us know in our heart if we are ever putting anything else in our life before you God, and we will correct our ways and put you first. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
