Luke 3:16 (CSB)
John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The Old Testament prophets foretold the arrival of the Messiah into the world. Because John the Baptist was baptizing people in water, some people wondered if he was the Messiah. John’s reply was that he is not even worthy to untie the strap of the Messiah’s sandals. In those times, because feet got dusty and dirty in sandals, the job of untying the sandals strap and cleaning the feet was done by the lowest household slaves.
In the verse it says, Jesus Christ will baptize people with the Holy Spirit and fire. It is often thought these are two separate baptisms. The Holy Spirit is given to people when they accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and are baptized, while unbelievers will receive the fiery judgement of God. Others believe the Holy Spirit and fire are one baptism. When a person is cleansed of their sins, the Holy Spirit is given to them and spiritual fire is a purification process that represents the presence of God burning away all evil.
Dear God,
Thank you for cleansing us of our sins and the gift you have given us of your Holy Spirit, when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. Thank you for the spiritual rebirth we have received. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
