Deuteronomy 4:40 (CSB)
“Keep his statutes and commands, which I am giving you today, so that you and your children after you may prosper and so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”
This was part of Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites on the plains of Moab, before they entered the Promised Land. Moses was telling the Israelites to obey God’s commands and statutes because by obeying God they would prosper, and not just them but also their children and future generations of children. To live long in the land that God was giving them meant that they would be secure in Canaan and so would future generations.
By following God’s commands and obeying Him, we are given many blessings from God. By living a righteous life we will live well and our children and future generations will also live well, if they follow God’s commands.
Unfortunately, for the ancient Israelites, they did not always obey God’s commands. Because of their disobedience they faced consequences. Over the following centuries, their disobedience resulted in them being conquered and put into temporary exiles.
Dear God,
May we always live righteously and follow your commands, so that we and future generations will have our lives blessed by you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
